About Aerial Yoga
Developed by a yoga teacher and aerialist, Unnata® Aerial yoga is a combination of traditional yoga poses done on the floor, and postures practiced using a soft fabric "trapeze" (called a "sling") suspended at waist height. This is the same fabric that aerialists use in the circus, but in aerial yoga our body weight is distributed between the fabric and the floor, allowing us to access traditional yoga postures in new ways.
Decompression
Many newcomers enjoy working with the sling because with the help of gravity there is very little pressure or stress on the joints, especially the spine. Inversions are accessed easily with no strain on the neck, back, or shoulders.
Alignment
Gravity eases us into optimal alignment with very little effort, and deep postures can be accessed through relaxation and deep breathing. Our relaxation response is heightened by the unique sensations accessed in aerial yoga.
Strength
Hanging in the sling makes our core muscles fire. It is so much fun you don't even realize what a great workout you're getting. Transitioning in and out of the aerial yoga postures builds upper body strength, and resting in the postures heightens relaxation for a balanced effort overall.
Class
Unnata® Aerial Yoga was designed for anyone of any age or fitness level. Complete beginners to yoga and/or aerial will be right at home. Students range in age from teens up to 70's, with everyone working at their own level. If you have any physical limitations or concerns, consult with your doctor first.
About Aerial Silks & Circus Arts
Aerial Fabric (also called Aerial Silks) is a beautiful, creative, and challenging art form that builds unparalleled upper body and core strength, kineasthenic awareness, coordination, and confidence. Beginners start by working in the sling and the knot, then progressing to basic climbs, footlocks, hip keys, and sequences starting low to the ground. More advanced students will learn beautiful transitions, sequences, and eventually drops on the aerial fabric. Anyone with determination and a great work ethic can progress quickly in these classes.
Strength
Aerial Silks build unparalleled upper body and core strength because you are working with your own body weight in the air. Even if you've never done a pull-up in your life, you will surprise yourself with what you can do on the silks. After a little time and dedication you will be able to lift your own body weight off the ground into various positions on the aerial fabric.
Grace
Aerial Silks bring out your inner grace. The apparatus forces us to focus and concentrate, and to move with intention. Even if you've never danced in your life, you will no doubt feel graceful after just a few sessions on the aerial fabric.
Class
Aerial Silks builds upper body and core stregnth. Everyone starts where they are. Someone with previous gymnastic, dance, rock-climbing, or pilates experience may progress more quickly than someone without, but anyone can benefit. If you have any physical limitations or concerns, consult with your doctor first. If you are concerned about a lack of upper body strength, start with an aerial yoga class and then talk to the instructor afterwards. After seeing your practice they will be able to better recommend which class is the best fit for you as you begin your aerial practice.
